ABSTRACT

Background : Ischemic stroke is a clinical condition that occurs due to blockages in the blood vessels of the brain so that it damages certain tissues in the brain. Method : The experimental quasi study, designed by design of two group pre-tests – post tests, aimed to determine the difference in the effect of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) and Active-Assistive ROM Exercise on increased muscle strength in ischemic post stroke hemiparesis patients. Held at Inggit Medical Centre Clinic with a sample of 34 people in accordance with the criteria of inclusion, randomized into 2 groups, namely treatment group I given Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) and treatment group II given Active-Assistive ROM Exercise. Results : The wilcoxon test analysis obtained p = 0.014 for UE and p = 0.008 for LE in treatment group I, and p = 0.014 for UE and p = 0.046 for LE in treatment group II, meaning that there was a meaningful influence of Proprioiveceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) and Active-Assistive ROM Exercise on increased muscle strength. Then, based on the Mann-Whitney test obtained a value of p = 1,000 for UE and p = 0.279 for LE, which means that there was no significant difference between treatment group I and treatment group II. Conclusion : Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) exercise is no more effective than Active-Assistive ROM Exercise in producing increased muscle strength in ischemic post stroke hemiparesis patients
